$25.48 "Every film is a foreign film," Atom Egoyan and Ian Balfour tell us in their introduction to Subtitles. How, then, to translate the experience of film -- which, as Egoyan says, makes us "feel outside and inside at the same time"? Taking subtitles as their point of departure, the thirty-two contributors to this unique collection consider translation, foreignness, and otherness in film culture. Their discussions range from the mechanics and aesthetics of subtitles themselves to the xenophobic reaction to translation to subtitles as a metaphor for the distance and intimacy of film. The essays, interviews, and visuals include a collaboration by Russell Banks and Atom Egoyan, which uses quotations from Banks's novel The Sweet Hereafter as subtitles for publicity stills from Egoyan's film of the book; three early film reviews by Jorge Luis Borges; an interview with filmmaker Claire Denis about a scene in her film Friday Night that should not have been subtitled; and Eric Cazdyn's reading of the running subtitles on CNN's post-9/11 newscasts as a representation of new global realities. Several writers deal with translating cultural experience for an international audience, including Frederic Jameson on Balkan cinema, John Mowitt on the history of the "foreign film" category in the Academy Awards, and Ruby Rich on the marketing of foreign films and their foreign languages -- "Somehow, I'd like to think it's harder to kill people when you hear their voices," she writes. And Slavoj Zizek considers the "foreign gaze" (seen in films by Hitchcock, Lynch, and others), the misperception that sees too much. Designed by Egoyan and award-winning graphic designer Gilbert Li, the book includes many color images and ten visual projects by artists and filmmakers. The pages are horizontal, suggesting a movie screen; they use the cinematic horizontal aspect ratio of 1.66:1. Subtitles gives us not only a new way to think about film but also a singular design object. Subtitles is being copublished by The MIT Press and Alphabet City Media (John Knechtel, Director). Subtitles has been funded in part by grants from The Canada Council for the Arts, The Henry N.R. Jackman Foundation, and the Toronto Arts Council, and the Ontario Arts Council. |

Flatland: The Movie
$23.68 pFlatland: The Movie is an exciting half-hour animated film based on Edwin Abbott's classic novel. Flatland is an entirely two-dimensional world where different shapes live, work, and play--all under the rule of the evil Circles who are determined to keep the third dimension a secret, at any cost. The story follows Arthur Square (Martin Sheen) and his curious granddaughter Hex (Kristen Bell). When the mysterious visitor Spherius (Michael York) arrives from Spaceland, Arthur and Hex face grave danger as they begin to come to terms with the truth of the third dimension. Combining action, drama, geometry, and sociopolitical commentary, this moving story challenges audiences to grasp the limitations of their assumptions about reality and to think about the possibility of higher and previously inconceivable dimensions (both literal and metaphorical).pDVD features: 4-D short feature: Brown University mathematician Thomas Banchoff discusses Flatland and the fourth dimension Interviews with cast members Martin Sheen, Kristen Bell, Michael York, Tony Hale, and Joe Estevez English and Spanish subtitles Full text of the novel that inspired the movieThe animation of Flatland stays close to the original in spirit, reinterpreting the tale for today's audiences. . . . I can imagine young people being intrigued by the ideas. . . . The main objective is to have fun playing around with the dimensional analogy, and I'd say the animation does that very well indeed. -- Ian Stewart Notices of the American Mathematical Society |

Spies & M [Subtitles] - Subtitle
$14.99 Includes:Spies (1928) M (1931) Spies Spies (Spione) was the first independent production of German "thriller" director Fritz Lang. The years-ahead-of-its-time plotline involves Russian espionage activity in London. The mastermind is Haghi (Rudolph Klein-Rogge), a supposedly respectable carnival sideshow entertainer. Heading the good guys is Agent 326 (Willy Fritsch), with the help of defecting Russian spy Sonya (Gerda Maurus). The film moves swiftly to several potential climaxes, each one more exciting than its predecessor. Haghi's ultimate demise is a superbly staged Pirandellian vignette. Anticipating Citizen Kane by a dozen years, director Lang dispenses with all transitional dissolves and fade-outs, flat-cutting territory from one scene to another. The film was co-scripted by Lang and his then-wife Thea Von Harbou. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide M Fritz Lang's classic early talkie crime melodrama is set in 1931 Berlin. The police are anxious to capture an elusive child murderer (Peter Lorre), and they begin rounding up every criminal in town. The underworld leaders decide to take the heat off their activities by catching the child killer themselves. Once the killer is fingered, he is marked with the letter "M" chalked on his back. He is tracked down and captured by the combined forces of the Berlin criminal community, who put him on trial for his life in a kangaroo court. The killer pleads for mercy, whining that he can't control his homicidal instincts. The police close in and rescue the killer from the underworld so that he can stand trial again in "respectable" circumstances. Some prints of the film end with a caution to the audience to watch after their children more carefully. Filmed in Germany, M was the film that solidified Fritz Lang's reputation with American audiences, and it also made a star out of Peter Lorre (previously a specialist in comedy roles!). M was remade by Hollywood in 1951, with David Wayne giving a serviceable performance as the killer. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide |

In Part one, "Les Batailles," Jeanne the Maid (Sandrine Bonnaire) leaves her childhood home in Domremy after hearing what she is sure was the voice of God. She believes that she can help lead France to victory on the battlefield, and she persuades Charles, dauphin of France (Andre Marcon) to allow her to guide his troops. Part two, "Les Prisons," concerns the sad aftermath of Jeanne's defeat at Orleans. Jeanne is sent to prison, where in two separate trials she is tried for heresy and impersonating a man, with both her life and the sanctity of her mortal body at stake. A four-hour version, with each of the two parts trimmed down to two hours, is also available. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide Jeanne La Pucelle: Les Prisons Jacques Rivette directed this richly detailed six-hour drama based on the story of Joan of Arc. She the Hard Way [4 Discs / Subtitles] - Widescreen Fullscreen
$12.99 Includes:The Muthers (1976), MPAA Rating: R Velluto Nero (1976) Savage Island (1979), MPAA Rating: R The Muthers This black-oriented women's prison film from Filipino director Cirio H. Santiago (T.N.T. Jackson) stars Playboy Playmates Rosanne Katon and Jeanne Bell as the leaders of a pirate gang who go undercover at a prison farm to save Bell's sister. As the wicked Serena, Jayne Kennedy cracks a whip and acts nasty until finally leading the obligatory insurrection. The prisoners pick coffee beans and the pirate women know kung-fu, making this one of the quirkier entries in the subgenre. Former Bond-girl Trina Parks (Diamonds Are Forever) and Santiago regular Ken Metcalfe co-star. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide Velluto Nero Like the cannibal films which followed, the Italian Black Emanuelle series (which, in fact, includes Emanuelle e gli Ultimi Cannibali) contains a very strong subtext of decadent Europeans oppressing other cultures. In many cases, as here, the instrument of oppression is the camera itself, and viewers of most Italian shock documentaries from Mondo Cane to Africa Addio probably didn't need a fictional softcore sex film to tell them that. The story line brings Emanuelle/Laura (Laura Gemser) back, but significantly as a model rather than her usual profession of journalist or photographer. The real shutterbug is Laura's sadistic boyfriend, Carlo (Gemser's real-life husband Gabriele Tinti), who stays with Laura at a fancy Nile River villa owned by pretty Crista (Nieves Navarro under her usual "Susan Scott" pseudonym). Various sexual intrigues ensue, involving Crista's daughters, a mute Arab servant, and Carlo's creepy habit of photographing Laura amidst backgrounds reeking of death and horror. There's also a wealthy gay pedophile (Feodor Chaliapin) and a goat sacrifice, but it's all really an excuse for Gemser to roll around naked in the sand with Annie Belle in one of the more memorable lesbian sequences in Italian exploitation. Fairly well directed by Brunello Rondi, the film was adapted from a story by another well-known exploitation director, Ferdinando Baldi, and edited by a third, Bruno Mattei. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide Savage Island Ostensibly starring American actress Linda Blair, who actually only spends about ten minutes on screen, this exploitation film was originally a Spanish-Italian exploitation film (Orinoco-Prison of Sex) that was re-edited with the new Blair footage inserted periodically to make it appeal to American audiences. The story (originally starring exotic European sex symbol Ajita Wilson and Anthony Steffen) is set within the horrific confines of a South American women's labor camp that forces inmates to slave in an emerald mine. Daly (Blair) is a former slave, who gets revenge upon the camp owner, a successful American gem broker. After a long search, she finally finds him, corners him in an office and while holding him at gunpoint with an Uzi, begins describing in detail the ordeal she and |

Urusei Yatsura TV 33 [Subtitles] -
$19.99 Includes:Urusei Yatsura [Anime Series] (1980) Urusei Yatsura [Anime Series] This classic sci-fi comedy series follows the exploits of Ataru, the most bumbling, lecherous fool ever to walk the halls of his high school. Ataru's family always seems too exhausted to deal with his antics, which may be why they allow Lum, the sweet but troublesome Oni who drops by their house to move in. Oni are creatures of Japanese mythology who have incredible powers and wear tiger skins. In Urusei Yatsura, however, we find our Oni is a beautiful girl who wears a tiger skin bikini. Lum falls in love with Ataru and becomes convinced that he will marry her. Hilarity ensues as Lum's powers always seem to infest the town with dinosaurs or envelope the family house in a mushroom cloud, but, somehow, things are always fine again by the next episode. Another point of note is Lum's enduring devotion to Ataru, despite his unfaithful nature. She may always forgive him, but the effects of her otherworldly powers always reap revenge on him anyway. ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide |

Fernando Arrabal Collection [3 Discs / Subtitles / Box Set] - Box Subtitle Limited
$89.99 Includes:Viva la Muerte (1971) I Will Walk Like a Crazy Horse (1973) L'Arbre de Guernica (1975) Viva la Muerte This is an extremely violent, gory, and surreal meditation on the life of a young lad during the time of the Spanish Civil War, as he attempts to find out what happened to his father, who has disappeared. It turns out that his mother, devout in her loyalty to the Falange, has turned him in as a leftist. Multiple scenes involve castration and the consumption of testicles, in one case by a victimized priest. The grotesquery includes a fantasy scene of a city swamped in the boy's urine, the mother having a bowel movement over the head of his father, and a deeply Oedipal scene with the boy, a bull and his mother. Not for the faint of heart, this film achieved cult status in New York City shortly after its release. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide I Will Walk Like a Crazy Horse Love, death, sainthood and murder figure in this French film by Spanish director Fernan Arrabal, better known for his film Viva La Muerte. Aden Rey (George Shannon) is an epileptic boy whose life has been stunted by the heavy religiosity and repressiveness of his mother (Emmanuele Riva), who has had numerous lovers. When she is found killed, the boy (who did not kill her) is the primary suspect. He flees, and goes to the desert. There, he finds a small-statured man (Hachemi Marzouk), a hermit. The hermit is very innocent, saintlike and free. Aden returns to the city with the hermit, who gets work as a circus performer until he frees the show's animals and Aden is wounded by pursuing police. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide L'Arbre de Guernica The director of this film, Fernando Arrabal, himself an exile from Spain, tells a story which takes place during the time of the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). A woman nearly suffers rape by the nephew of the local nobleman but is rescued by the man's son. The boy is an artist whose works are too modern and rebellious, even blasphemous, for his conservative countrymen. After fighting for some time with the Republican cause, both of them are arrested by the Franco faction. The boy is tortured and disfigured by his captors, but his love for the woman restores him to full life. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide |

Kino-eye / Three Songs of Lenin [Subtitles] - Subtitle
$24.99 Includes:Kinoglaz (1924) Tri Pesni o Lenine (1934) Kinoglaz The first part of Kinoglaz is set in a rural village peopled by Russian peasants. A group of children (referred to as "Young Pioneers") mobilize the adults into the new covenant of Russian society under communism. Since the Young Pioneers can read and keep up with the new Soviet literature, and dutifully poster the town with relevant information, they are able to sway the grown-ups away from the filthy, over-priced open-air market run by privateers toward the neat and reasonably-priced food co-operative run by the government. The children help an old widow harvest her grain and build a camp where they practice marching and hold pro-Leninist rallies; the red flag is raised. The positive activities of the Young Pioneers earn some of the children a trip to Moscow. When the action moves to the city in the second part, all of the urban ills awaiting the Young Pioneers are exposed: there are scenes showing drug addicts, a tuberculosis sanatorium, a lunatic asylum, black marketers, and other societal riffraff. Also shown is the funeral of a worker and family man who has been murdered by men who frequent the local tavern; as the Young Pioneers' clubhouse is located directly above this drinking establishment, the children redress the balance of justice in littering it with leaflets. These images serve as a warning against the temptations of decadence and evil -- though the connection of such moral degradation to capitalist society is implied, it is never openly stated. At the close of Kinoglaz, there is the promise and a demonstration of new technologies such as electricity delivered to the home and the miracle of radio. ~ David Lewis, All Movie Guide Tri Pesni o Lenine This compilation from Russia (with English subtitles) provides a look at the country's famous leader, Vladimir Ilich Lenin (1870-1924) in three short films about his life and his historical significance. ~ Kristie Hassen, All Movie Guide |

BEE MOVIE (SPANISH VERSION)
$17.96 Touted as Jerry Seinfeld's first major project since the 1998 end of his long-running eponymous TV series, 2007's computer-animated BEE MOVIE stars the popular comedian as the voice of Barry B. Benson, a young bee eager to explore the world outside of his hive. As he discovers how people live in New York City, he befriends a human florist, Vanessa Bloome (Renee Zellweger), and becomes outraged at the selling of honey, leading to a lawsuit and, of course, plenty of Seinfeldian misadventures. Helmed by directors Steve Hickner (THE PRINCE OF EGYPT) and Simon J. Smith (a member of the SHREK creative team), BEE MOVIE lightens Seinfeld's notoriously stinging humor for a family audience, while staying true to its inherent New York-bred quirkiness. This leaves room for the film to feature impressive (if anatomically incorrect) bug-oriented CGI animation and a solid supporting cast that includes Zellweger, Matthew Broderick, John Goodman, Chris Rock, and Ray Liotta (who plays a honey-peddling animated version of himself). Although it inhabits some of the same insect-populated territory as A BUG's LIFE and ANTZ, BEE MOVIE also nods to THE GRADUATE (admittedly a Seinfeld favorite) in its restless protagonist, resulting in a playful and thoroughly entertaining film that even manages to work an environmental message into its colorful palette. |
